City denies rental permit

Palm Desert, CA: In recent meetings, the Palm Desert City Council has voted down 3-2 a conditional use permit for a short-term rental.

Mayor Jean Benson and Councilmembers Cindy Finerty and Bill Kroonen voted for the denial, and all three said short-term rentals can change the atmosphere of what had been a purely residential area.

Mayor Pro Tem Bob Spiegel disagreed. “We're a resort city, we can't deny that. There are people who have bought here in the residential areas” as a vacation rental and potential future retirement home,” he said.

He and Councilwoman Jan Harnik also said they feared making it too difficult to get a permit would drive the practice underground.

Many owners either fail or don't know they need to register as a business and pay transient occupancy tax to the city, just like a hotel.
