Maui Council Delays Action on Rental Bill

Maui County has an estimated 1100 to 1500 unpermitted vacation rentals, and county council members propose capping the number of permitted short term rentals at around 400 units, in response to complaints from VR neighbors about noise and other disruptions.
Vacation rental advocates say there should be a way to allow for more vacation rental operations that provide jobs and contribute to the island's economy without upsetting neighbors.
The rental bill currently being considered by the county council would establish a clear process for permitting VRs.   After consideration of the current draft of the bill this week it was referred back to staff for revisions.
