"The More the Merrier" - Official Wants More Short Term Rentals

"The more the merrier," says small business owner and Commission Chairperson Josh Stone, when he was asked how many Vacation Rentals he wanted to allow in the Paia-Haiku area of Maui.
Stone states that efforts by former Mayor Charmaine Tavares to crack down on unpermitted vacation rentals caused "immediate and devastating" problems for north-shore businesses that rely on visitors who prefer vacation rentals to a resort-hotel experience.
"We need tourists on the north shore," he added.
Council Member Mike White expressed concerns that new regulations would hurt vacation rentals that "aren't bothering anybody."
"I don't want any TVR (transient vacation rental) to be shut down by this measure," he said.
