San Luis Obispo County Approves New Vacation Rental Regulations

Vacation rentals in Avila Beach and Oceano will be affected by amendments to a county ordinance approved last week by the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors.

However, the amendments must be approved by the California Coastal Commission to become effective, and it’s hard to estimate how long that might take, said Kami Griffin, assistant director of the County Department of Planning and Building.

Supervisors unanimously approved the amendments April 14 at a public hearing continued from Feb. 7, when the board asked staff to come back with more information.

Except for specific location requirements in Avila Beach, Cambria and Cayucos, the amendments apply to vacation rental houses in all coastal zones of the county except Los Osos.

The proposed amendments drew opposition from business interests who said it went too far and support from residents who said it didn’t go far enough.
